A discrete-element model for viscoelastic deformation and fracture of glacial ice

a b s t r a c t A discrete-element model was developed to study the behavior of viscoelastic materials that are allowed to fracture. Applicable to many materials, the main objective of this analysis was to develop a model specifically for ice dynamics. A realistic model of glacial ice must include elasticity, brittle fracture and slow viscous deformations. Here the model is described in detail and tested with several benchmark simulations. The model was used to simulate various ice-specific applications with resulting flow rates that were compatible with Glen's law, and produced under fragmentation fragment-size distributions that agreed with the known analytical and experimental results.
Apparent and Real Distribution in GPC (Experiments with PMMA Samples)

Abstract Molecular weight distribution curves obtained by GPC are broadened if concentration and flow rate are fixed in the usual range. Therefore, the apparent nonuniformity U app of the samples is larger than the real non-uniformity U = (Mw/Mn) −1. For a number of fractionated and unfractionated samples of polymethyl methacrylate we determined M n and M w by osmotic, light-scattering, and viscosity measurements. Thus, the real value of U can be compared to U app obtained by GPC at different concentrations and flow rates, υ. Due to the growing size and complexity of modern information systems, critical design information is often distributed via multiple diagrams. This slows search performance and results in reading errors that later cause omissions and inconsistencies in the final designs. Abstract This work proposes a correlation for the specific capital cost of multi-effect distillation (MED) plants, considering their main design options and parameters, such as the number of effects, size/capacity, and heat source temperature. These parameters are varied within a large range to cover as many different cases as possible. The cost correlation decouples the evaporator cost and includes in the expression the ratio of the heat exchanger area to a reference one. The so-called "fundamental equation for gradient elution" has been used for modeling the retention in gradient elution. In this approach, the instantaneous retention factor (k) is expressed as a function of the change in the modifier content (φ(ts )), ts being the time the solute has spent in the stationary phase. In this paper, a new simulation technique which can include microstructural inhomogeneity of particulate reinforced composites is proposed to accurately study deformation pattern and damage mechanism in these composites. Three dimensional microstructures constructed from XCT images incorporated into finite element modeling codes with minimal approximation to capture the effects of cluster size, local volume fraction of particles in the cluster and the distance between clusters as relevant statistical quantities describing the microstructural inhomogeneity of particulate reinforced composites. Orthogonal cutting simulation of OFHC copper using a new constitutive model considering the state of stress and the microstructure effects

International audience; This work aims to develop an orthogonal cutting model for surface integrity prediction, which incorporates a new constitutive model of Oxygen Free High Conductivity (OFHC) copper. It accounts for the effects of the state of stress on the flow stress evolution up to fracture. Moreover, since surface integrity parameters are sensitive to the microstructure of the work material, this constitutive model highlights also the recrystallization effects on the flow stress. Orthogonal cutting model is validated using experimental designed cutting tests. More accurate predictions were obtained using this new constitutive model comparing to the classical Johnson-Cook model.
